You’re Not Behind (You’re Carrying More)
Share
If you’re building a business while dealing with chronic illness, disability, neurodivergence, caring responsibilities, or a body that doesn’t behave predictably, I need you to hear this:
You’re not behind.
I’m saying that as someone building in it too — not from a neat, finished place.
A lot of business advice is built on an assumption: that you can show up consistently, at the same level, day after day and week after week.
It assumes you can plan your month in advance. It assumes you can push through. It assumes your energy is a reliable resource.
And if that’s not your reality, it can start to feel like you’re failing.
But you’re not.
The timeline you’re comparing yourself to isn’t designed for you
Most “growth” timelines are designed around people who can be physically present, mentally clear, and consistently available.
If you’re managing symptoms, appointments, medication changes, pain, fatigue, brain fog, sensory overload, or flare-ups, you’re not starting from the same place.
You’re building with extra weight.
So when your output looks different, it’s not because you’re less committed.
It’s because you’re doing more than one job at once.
The question that messes with my head: “am I ill enough?”
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve talked myself out of asking for access support because I’m scared someone will think I’m being dramatic.
“Am I ill enough? Disabled enough? Do I have the right to say this out loud?”
When your capacity changes day to day, it’s easy to feel like you’re not “consistent enough” to count.
But access isn’t something you earn by suffering.
If something would help me function, that’s reason enough.
What if the goal isn’t “keep up”?
What if the goal is to build something that can survive real life?
A business that doesn’t collapse the moment your health dips.
A way of working that doesn’t require you to be visible every day to be valid.
A community where you don’t have to justify why you disappeared for a week.
That’s what I’m trying to build.
Why I’m building The Hues Project
The Hues Project is for product-based founders who are building under extra constraints.
Not as a sob story. Not as inspo porn.
Just as reality.
It’s for the founders who are talented and capable, but who can’t (and shouldn’t have to) build on the same terms as someone with unlimited energy, stable health, and a nervous system that plays nicely.
It’s for the founders who want a calmer route to market.
And it’s for the customers and supporters who want to find and back disabled-led, chronically ill-led, and neurodivergent-led brands — without those founders having to shout to be seen.
If you’ve been feeling behind, consider this your permission slip
Permission to:
- build in seasons
- rest without earning it
- choose sustainability over speed
- do the next right thing, not all the things
- stop treating inconsistency like a moral failure
You’re not behind.
You’re adapting.
And that is a skill.
Want to be part of this (while it’s still early)?
If you’re a founder and this made you exhale a bit, I’d love you in the Hues Lab waitlist.
It’s going to be a WhatsApp community to start — simple, accessible, and built for real capacity.
